From elegant hammered copper bowls to candle holders woven with twisted copper wire, and from sturdy fire pokers to graceful steel candle bases, each piece carried the mark of its makerās creativity and determination.
These workshops are more than just craft – theyāre a window into the artistic, hands-on learning that our tamariki experience every day. Parents step into the same world of discovery, learning ancient skills, creating something lasting with their own hands, and connecting with one another in the warmth of shared experience.

The story of Stone Soup tells of hungry travellers who arrive in a village with nothing but an empty pot and a ‘magic’ stone. āWeāll make stone soup!ā they said. The villagers were curious – who could eat a soup made from a stone? But, one by one, everyone added a carrot here, a potato there, a sprinkle of herbs⦠and soon the pot was bubbling with the most delicious soup the whole village could share. Together, they created a meal far greater than anyone could have made alone – a beautiful reminder of community, generosity, and sharing.

Over the past year, Class 5 have lovingly nurtured 800 native saplings through the Trees for Survival programme. They recently spent the day in Clevedon planting every single one!
Donning gloves and boots, students gathered to discuss safety, teamwork, and the importance of planting trees for the health of our taiao (environment). They reflected on how trees stabilise land, prevent erosion, provide food and habitats for wildlife, create beautiful natural spaces, and help keep our air clean.
The planting was done with great care – roots tucked in with mulch blankets, no āvolcanoesā or ācratersā around stems, and plenty of cheerful chatter (especially when worms and grubs were found!). Even light drizzle couldnāt dampen their enthusiasm.
After an hour and a half, 712 trees were securely in the ground – a wonderful achievement and a meaningful contribution to environmental restoration in our region. Lunch of warm sausages, quiche, and ice blocks was the perfect way to celebrate.
Ka mau te wehi, Class 5! šæ
